About Expert Queens

Expert takes the board to 11×11, and with an odd number of rows the symmetry that sometimes helps on even grids disappears. The regions are the real difficulty though — intricate, interlocking shapes that rarely give up a queen without several other placements first.

There is no new rule to learn at this tier. What changes is how long you must hold a chain of reasoning before it pays off: it is common to eliminate cells for several minutes before the first queen becomes certain. Players who rush place a queen on a hunch, and on an 11×11 board an early wrong guess can take a long time to unwind.

There are 30 puzzles here, each running thirteen to sixteen minutes. Treat them as sittings rather than something to fit into a coffee break.

Game Rules

  • Each row must have exactly one queen.
  • Each column must have exactly one queen.
  • Each color region must have exactly one queen.
  • Queens cannot touch, not even diagonally.
