Novice is the smallest Crossclimb there is: three four-letter rungs to clue, drawn from the most common words in English, then two end words that read together as a phrase or compound word (BOOK + WORM). With three rungs the ordering stage has only a few possibilities, so it is the right place to learn how the stages fit together: clues first, then the ladder, then the ends.
One habit is worth building from the start: read every clue before answering any. Each answer is one letter from two others, so a rung you're sure of tells you a lot about the letters in its neighbours.
