Master is six rungs with clues drawn from the widest vocabulary: up to three rungs in a ladder may be words you know but would not reach for, and most ladders are five-letter words. Every ladder has a single valid order, so there is no slack: the words are specific and the clues assume you know them.
Solve what you can, then use the letters. Two solved rungs that share all but one letter are adjacent; a rung that shares that many with neither is an end of the chain. Read the ladder off the letters and the last clue often answers itself.
