Patches Strategy Guide: How to Solve Rectangle Puzzles Faster
Patches hands you a grid of numbered clues and one job: divide the board into rectangles so every clue's size and shape are satisfied, with no gaps or overlaps. The Core Insight: Every Placement Constrains Its Neighbors
The biggest mindset shift is realizing that a rectangle isn't valid just because it satisfies its own clue - it also has to leave a solvable shape for every clue around it. A clue often has two or three candidate rectangles that fit its area and badge, but only one of them avoids cutting off a neighboring clue's only remaining option. Strong players constantly ask 'what does this placement leave behind for the clues next to it?' rather than just 'does this rectangle fit?'
Where to Start on Any Grid
- Place Square-badged clues first - equal width and height means there's only one possible rectangle for a given area, so it's never ambiguous.
- Check corner and edge clues next. A clue tucked into a corner has far fewer legal placements because the board boundary already rules most orientations out.
- Handle large-area clues before small ones. A big rectangle removes a lot of board at once and usually forces its neighbors' hands; tiny 2-cell gaps left at the end almost always have exactly one legal fit anyway.
- Count remaining cells. If a region of unclaimed cells has an area that doesn't divide evenly among the clues touching it, at least one of your earlier placements is wrong.
Reading the Any-Shape Clues
Clues with an Any badge (the asterisk) are the ones that create real ambiguity, since they drop the proportion constraint and leave only the area to work with. Don't try to solve them in isolation - place every exactly-badged clue around them first, since each one shrinks the pool of cells the Any clue could possibly claim. On hard and expert grids, where Any badges are common, the board usually solves from the edges inward: pin down the constrained perimeter first, then the open middle collapses to a single answer.
When You're Stuck: The Leftover-Area Test
If the last one or two clues won't fit no matter how you draw them, the mistake is almost always in an earlier placement, not the current one. Look at the unclaimed cells: do they form a connected block with an area that matches the sum of the remaining clues? If the leftovers are split into two disconnected pockets, no legal set of rectangles can cover them - so undo your most recent placement and try its other candidate shape. This leftover-area test turns a frustrating dead end into a precise diagnosis.
